Church of Saint Simeon Stylites
Religious Site Ruined Byzantine church built around famous saint's column
Fifth-century Byzantine pilgrimage complex northwest of Aleppo built around Saint Simeon’s pillar; scholars and visitors come for extensive ruins, mosaic fragments and early Christian architectural remains.
The Church of Saint Simeon Stylites is a late antique Byzantine pilgrimage complex in northern Syria, built around the column associated with the ascetic saint Simeon Stylites the Elder. The monument dates to the mid 5th century and became a major pilgrimage destination in Late Antiquity.
Surviving ruins include the layout of a large octagonal courtyard, the foundations and masonry of the basilicas and chapels that served pilgrims, and the remains of the monumental column base. The site is significant for its scale and for illustrating early Christian pilgrimage architecture.
Saint Simeon (c. 389-459) lived atop a column near the site; after his death a monumental complex was erected circa the 470s to enshrine his column and accommodate pilgrims. Over the centuries the complex suffered earthquake damage and subsequent abandonment, leaving substantial archaeological remains.
The ruins lie in Aleppo Governorate in northwestern Syria, northwest of the city of Aleppo and within the historic region known as Mount Simeon.
