The Church of Saint Sava is a large Serbian Orthodox cathedral on the Vračar plateau in Belgrade, dedicated to Saint Sava, the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church. It is one of the largest Orthodox church buildings in the world and a dominant landmark on Belgrade’s skyline.

The church features a monumental central dome and classical-Byzantine architectural forms; its interior decoration includes extensive mosaic work that has been completed in stages into the 21st century. An underground crypt houses exhibition space and is open to visitors as part of the complex.

The project began with a foundation ceremony in 1935 and progressed through interrupted phases of construction across the 20th century, with major exterior works completed in recent decades. Interior works, including mosaics and decorative finishes, have continued into the 21st century.

The cathedral sits on the Vračar plateau in central Belgrade, within walking distance of the city centre and public transport links. The surrounding open plateau offers clear views over downtown Belgrade.

The Church of Saint Sava sits on the Vračar plateau in central Belgrade. It is within walking distance of central city landmarks: from Slavija Square or the main downtown boulevards it’s about a 10-20 minute walk.

The site is served by numerous Belgrade city buses and trolleybuses that stop on Vračar and around Slavija; taxis and rideshares from the city centre or the main railway station (a few kilometres away) are a quick option.

• Go early on a weekday (right after opening) to see the interior with fewer tourists and to get clearer photographs of the huge dome and mosaics.
• Enter from the main steps on the Vračar plateau (the principal approach) and check opening hours for the crypt below the nave - the crypt contains extensive mosaics and exhibits separate from the main sanctuary and is easily missed if you only see the exterior.
