The Church of Panagia Chalkeon is an 11th-century Byzantine church in Thessaloniki, Greece, named after the coppersmiths’ quarter that once clustered nearby. It is recognised for its well-preserved brick decoration and compact Byzantine plan.
The plan is a typical middle Byzantine cross-in-square, with a central dome over a small interior space decorated historically with frescoes. Some original painted decoration survives in fragments and has been the subject of conservation work.
Built in the 11th century, the church served the local Orthodox community through Byzantine, Ottoman and modern periods, retaining much of its medieval form despite changes in the surrounding urban fabric.
The church sits in central Thessaloniki close to the old city centre and other Byzantine monuments, making it part of the city’s dense group of historic churches.
