Main image

The Church of Hvalsey is the stone ruin of a Norse medieval church located at the Hvalsey farmstead on Greenland’s southeastern coast in Kujalleq municipality.

Built and used by Norse settlers during the medieval period, the well-preserved stone walls are a visible remnant of Greenland’s Norse settlements; the site is notable for the 1408 written record of a marriage, the last known contemporary Norse written reference from Greenland.

The ruin lies on the shore near the modern town of Qaqortoq and is reached from local harbours and coastal paths.

  • Historic record: The site contains the best-preserved Norse church ruins in Greenland and is associated with the last written Norse record on Greenland - a marriage recorded in 1408.
