Chumash Painted Cave State Historic Park

Chumash Painted Cave State Historic Park preserves a small sandstone cave with painted rock art created by the Chumash people. The site is a state historic park established to protect the paintings and provide public interpretation.

The main highlight is the painted cave panel itself, showing polychrome motifs and figures executed on the cave interior; a fenced viewing area and interpretive signs allow visitors to examine the art without direct contact. The site is compact and typically visited as a short stop rather than a long hike.

The paintings were produced by Chumash communities prior to and during the early contact period and have been recorded and conserved by archaeologists and state park staff. The park status prevents disturbance and limits access to protect the fragile pigments.

The cave sits on the north-facing slopes of the Santa Ynez Mountains above the Santa Barbara area in Southern California, accessed from Painted Cave Road and nearby mountain routes.
