The Chugoku Mountains are an east-west mountain chain across the Chugoku region of western Honshu in Japan, forming the backbone of that region. The range includes peaks reaching around 1,700-1,800 metres and shapes regional geography and climate.
The mountains have long formed natural boundaries within western Honshu and influenced historical travel and settlement patterns; local transport routes and towns developed around accessible passes. Forestry, mountain agriculture and small-scale mining have featured in the region’s economic history.
The range runs roughly east-west across the Chugoku region of Honshu, separating the Seto Inland Sea coast to the south from the Sea of Japan coast to the north. It spans multiple prefectures and lies west of the Kansai region.
