Chugach Mountains
Mountains Coastal Alaskan range with glaciers and rugged peaks
A mountain range east of Anchorage and along Prince William Sound, the Chugach Mountains attract hikers, backcountry skiers, glacier trekkers and wildlife watchers seeking rugged coastal-Alaska terrain and alpine access.
The Chugach Mountains are a coastal mountain range in south-central Alaska that form a rugged spine along the northern shore of the Gulf of Alaska. The range contains extensive glaciation, steep peaks, and deep fjords.
Outdoor recreation is a primary draw - the range supports hiking, mountaineering, backcountry skiing, and glacier travel, with popular access points near Anchorage and in Prince William Sound. The area includes large tracts of protected land and roadside trailheads for day trips.
The Chugach were uplifted by tectonic collision and extensively shaped by Pleistocene and ongoing glaciation, creating the steep relief and many valley glaciers found today. Human use has included indigenous subsistence, later exploration and resource access, and modern recreation and conservation.
Geographically the range runs along the Gulf of Alaska in south-central Alaska and lies immediately east and southeast of Anchorage, extending toward the Kenai Peninsula and Prince William Sound. Coastal fjords and nearby lowlands separate the Chugach from interior mountain systems.
