Park Historic Danish colonial district preserving 18th-century architecture

Main image

Christiansted National Historic Site preserves central portions of the Danish colonial-era town of Christiansted on Saint Croix, including Fort Christian and adjacent historic buildings. The site illustrates colonial government, commerce, and urban design in the Caribbean.

Visitors can walk the historic streets, view restored civic buildings, and tour the fort, which served military, administrative and commercial functions during Danish rule. Interpretive programmes explain the town’s role in Atlantic trade and colonial administration.

The preserved structures date mainly to the 18th and early 19th centuries and reflect Danish colonial architecture and urban planning. The National Park Service manages the site to preserve its historic fabric and conduct education and outreach.

The site occupies a waterfront area of Christiansted on Saint Croix, with the fort and town square adjacent to the harbour and marina.

  • Fort Christian: Includes Fort Christian, an 18th-century defensive structure and one of the oldest surviving buildings in the U.S. Virgin Islands, open for tours and interpretation.

What to See #

  • Fort Christian: A masonry fort begun in the 18th century that served as the administrative and military centre for the Danish colonial town and is the oldest standing structure within the site.
  • Colonial town buildings: Historic commercial and civic buildings from the Danish colonial period that line the waterfront and town square, now interpreted to illustrate colonial government, trade, and daily life.
