Christiansborg Palace
Palace Seat of Denmark's parliament and national government
On Slotsholmen island in central Copenhagen, Christiansborg combines parliament chambers, royal reception rooms and archaeological ruins. Visitors tour the Royal Reception Rooms, the tower and the palace kitchens museum.
Christiansborg Palace sits on the islet of Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen and is the seat of the Danish Parliament, the Prime Minister’s Office and parts of the Supreme Court. The present palace stands on the site of earlier royal residences and combines civic and state functions in one complex.
The complex contains the palace tower with a public viewing platform, the Royal Reception Rooms used for state occasions, the parliamentary chambers and archaeological ruins exposed beneath the building. Visitors can see a mix of official rooms, historic interiors and modern civic spaces across the site.
The current Christiansborg is the result of several rebuilds after earlier fires; the present structures date principally from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and were completed in their current form in the early 20th century. The site has been a centre of power in Denmark for centuries and retains both ceremonial royal spaces and active government use.
Located on Slotsholmen in the heart of Copenhagen, the palace is immediately adjacent to the canals and a short walk from Strøget and the central train stations. Its central position makes it a hub for other city landmarks and museums nearby.
- Public access: Parts of the palace are active government offices and parliament, so access can be restricted when official events take place.
- Viewing platform: The palace tower offers panoramic views over Copenhagen and is a reliable vantage point for orientation around the city centre.
What to See #
- Christiansborg Palace Tower: The Palace Tower rises above Slotsholmen and provides a panoramic public viewing platform offering city views; the tower is one of the tallest public viewpoints in central Copenhagen.
- Royal and civic rooms: Includes the Royal Reception Rooms used for state ceremonies, the parliamentary chambers of the Folketing, and visible archaeological ruins under parts of the palace.
