Christiansø
Island Small Danish island fortress and nature reserve
Part of the Ertholmene archipelago off Bornholm, Christiansø preserves 17th-century fortifications, cannon emplacements and narrow lanes. Visitors arrive by ferry for island walks, seabird colonies and a few guesthouses serving local seafood.
Christiansø is the main inhabited island of the Ertholmene archipelago administratively linked to Bornholm, Denmark, and is known for its well-preserved 17th-century fortifications. The island functions as a small village with historic military works and a harbour.
The fortifications on Christiansø were constructed in the late 17th century as part of Denmark’s coastal defensive network and include ramparts, batteries and associated buildings. The compact village area contains narrow streets, wooden houses and a small harbour used by visiting boats.
The island is a protected and managed landscape with seasonal visitor services; its combination of military architecture, maritime views and limited population make it a distinct cultural and natural destination.
Christiansø lies in the Baltic Sea to the northeast of the larger island of Bornholm, reachable by ferry and boat trips from Bornholm’s harbours.
- Ferry connections: Regular passenger ferries and boats connect the island to Bornholm, typically from Gudhjem or Allinge, and journeys are weather-dependent and often seasonal.
- Visitor services and duration: The island has a small permanent population and a compact built area; services and accommodation are limited, so visitors commonly make day trips from Bornholm.
What to See #
- Village and harbour: The main settlement occupies the western part of the island and is arranged around a small harbour with narrow streets and historic wooden houses.
- Seventeenth-century fortifications: Fortified ramparts, gun batteries and military buildings dating from the late 17th century form the core historic fortifications on the island.
- Lighthouse and viewpoints: A harbour lighthouse and several coastal observation points offer views across the Baltic and to neighbouring islets in the Ertholmene group.

- Bring cash - the island's small cafés and shops may not accept cards reliably.
- Walk the ramparts at dawn or dusk when the light turns the sea glass-gray and the gulls settle in for the night.
