Christ Church Greyfriars
Ruins Historic London church, Blitz-damaged with surviving ruins
In the City of London, Christ Church Greyfriars is a historic church rebuilt by Christopher Wren and damaged in World War II; visitors come for its architectural remains and wartime history.
Christ Church Greyfriars is a historic church site in the City of London, originally a medieval Franciscan friary and later the parish church on the same site. It is notable for its post-Great Fire reconstruction and for surviving only as a partial ruin after World War II.
The most visible elements on site are the ruined nave and the standing tower that mark the footprint of the Wren church rebuilt after 1666. Much of the interior was destroyed by bombing in May 1941, leaving the tower and fragments of the stonework as the principal features visitors see today. The open area within the ruined footprint functions as a planted public garden and occasional venue for outdoor events.
The site began as a medieval Greyfriars friary and later became the parish church for the neighbourhood. After the Great Fire of London in 1666 the church was rebuilt under the direction of Sir Christopher Wren. Heavy bombing during the Second World War caused extensive destruction and the decision was taken not to fully reconstruct the nave, leaving the site as a conserved ruin.
The church stands in the City of London, north of the River Thames, within the historic central London district. It sits close to major City landmarks and transport links and is managed as part of the City’s portfolio of historic sites and open spaces.
- Blitz damage: The church was largely destroyed by bombing during the London Blitz in May 1941; the nave was gutted and not rebuilt.
- Wren reconstruction: Reconstruction work after the Great Fire of 1666 was carried out under Sir Christopher Wren, who rebuilt the parish church on the medieval site.
- Current site use: The surviving tower and ruined nave are maintained as a public garden and event space by the City of London Corporation.
