How to Get to Choibalsan (city)
Choibalsan is most easily reached by a domestic flight from Ulaanbaatar; overland options exist but are long and infrequent. The town itself is small and short taxi rides connect the airport, bus stops and hotels.
Choibalsan Airport (COQ): Choibalsan has an airport with scheduled domestic flights to/from Ulaanbaatar (operated by national/regional carriers). Flights take around 1.5-2 hours; on arrival a taxi into the city centre is short (typically 10-20 minutes) - expect to pay roughly MNT 5,000-15,000 depending on vehicle and time.
Ulaanbaatar (ULN - Chinggis Khaan International): For international arrivals fly into Ulaanbaatar and book a domestic service to Choibalsan. Domestic flights depart from Ulaanbaatar’s domestic terminal; total travel time including the domestic flight is typically 2.5-4 hours door-to-door.
Train: Mongolia’s rail network does not provide convenient passenger rail links into Dornod Province-rail is not a practical option for reaching Choibalsan.
Bus / Road: Long-distance buses and private minibuses run from Ulaanbaatar and regional centres but journeys are long (often 24+ hours by road) and infrequent. Most travelers use scheduled domestic flights for reliability; local taxis or shared jeeps cover short regional trips.
