Chogha Zanbil is an ancient Elamite religious complex in Khuzestan province, Iran, centered on a large mudbrick ziggurat and dating to c. 1250 BCE. It is one of the best-preserved ziggurat sites from the Elamite civilization.
The complex was founded by King Untash-Napirisha as a state religious center in the mid second millennium BCE and functioned as an Elamite cultic precinct before falling out of use in later centuries.
Chogha Zanbil is situated in Khuzestan province in southwestern Iran, in the general region associated with the ancient city of Susa (modern Shush).
- Date and builder: Built around 1250 BCE by the Elamite king Untash-Napirisha, it is one of the few near-intact ziggurat complexes surviving from the ancient Near East.

How to Get to Chogha Zanbil #
Chogha Zanbil is a rural archaeological site near the city of Shush (Susa) in Khuzestan and is reached by road. Visitors normally travel by car or taxi from Shush; the site is a short drive off the local highway and has a small parking area with a brief walk from parking to the ziggurat. Public transport is limited, so plan on hiring a car/taxi from Shush or another nearby town.
Tips for Visiting Chogha Zanbil #
- Visit at cooler hours (early morning or late afternoon) - the site is exposed and can be very hot in the middle of the day; golden-hour light is also best for photography of the mud-brick ziggurat.
- Start at the on-site visitor area and follow the marked paths around the mound to appreciate construction details and the surrounding temple remains that many visitors skip when they only view the central ziggurat.
- Allow extra travel time from nearby Khuzestan towns - Chogha Zanbil is remote and public-transport options are limited, so check opening hours and coordinate private transfer or a guided trip in advance.
