How to Get to Chitungwiza

By Air

Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport (HRE): The main international gateway for Harare and the surrounding area, including Chitungwiza, is Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport (often still called Harare International). From the airport to Chitungwiza you can take an airport taxi or pre-booked transfer to Harare city centre and then a local kombi/minibus on to Chitungwiza - expect the whole journey to take around 45-75 minutes depending on traffic. Airport taxis to Harare city centre typically cost about US$25-35 and take 30-45 minutes; from Harare city centre a kombi/minibus to Chitungwiza is usually about US$0.50-1.50 and takes 20-40 minutes.

By Train & Bus

Train: National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) operates long-distance passenger services to and from Harare Railway Station (central Harare), but there is no reliable commuter rail service directly serving Chitungwiza. Trains are therefore not a practical option for daily travel between Chitungwiza and Harare; schedules are infrequent and aimed at inter-city travel.

Bus / Minibus (Kombi): The most common option is shared minibuses (kombis) and ZUPCO buses from Harare (departing from hubs such as Mbare Musika and other city termini) to Chitungwiza’s local bus stops/terminus. Journey time is generally 20-45 minutes from central Harare depending on traffic. Fares are very low - commonly around US$0.50-1.50 for kombis and similar for local ZUPCO services - but services can be crowded and run on flexible timetables.

How to Get Around Chitungwiza

Getting around Chitungwiza works best by combining shared minibuses (kombis) for cheap direct trips and taxis when you need speed or comfort. Trains are not practical for local travel, so expect to use kombis, ZUPCO buses or a hired car for most journeys.
