Chitato Travel Guide
City City in Luanda Norte province, Angola
Remote town near Angola’s northeast diamond fields, Chitato draws visitors interested in offbeat regional markets, rough roads to Dundo, and savannah landscapes. Travelers come for village life, local cassava cuisine, and riverine fishing trips rather than polished tourist infrastructure.
Why Visit Chitato? #
Chitato, in diamond-rich Lunda Norte, invites travelers intrigued by Angola’s mining history, regional markets and the savanna landscapes around Dundo. Local culinary staples like funge and muamba appear in family-run eateries, and markets bustle with crafts and fresh produce. Visitors come for off-the-beaten-track cultural encounters, mining heritage sites and nearby natural areas that reveal northern Angola’s rhythms.
Who's Chitato For?
Chitato lies in Lunda Norte’s mining belt and serves as a regional hub for diamond and resource companies. Expect logistics services, basic hotels and office support for field staff; travel here is predominantly commercial and industry-focused.
The surrounding area offers raw, undeveloped landscapes and seasonal rivers-appealing if you value remote nature and wide skies. Infrastructure is limited, so guided trips and a reliable vehicle are recommended for exploring safely off the main roads.
For adventurous travelers, routes around Chitato provide off-road driving, bush camping and river fishing. Conditions are rugged and services sparse; bring supplies and local guidance if you plan multi-day excursions into the hinterland.
Local life centers on community and outdoor play; families visiting for work or to see relatives will find simple markets and basic services. Tourist amenities are minimal, so plan family activities around nature outings and community events.

How to Get to Chitato
Chitato (served from nearby Dundo) is most easily reached by flying into Dundo Airport (DUE) on a domestic connection from Luanda. Overland options exist by long-distance coach from Luanda and other provinces, but journeys are long and rough; for most visitors a flight to Dundo plus a short taxi or hotel transfer is the practical choice.
Aeroporto de Dundo (DUE): The closest airport to Chitato is Dundo Airport (DUE), serving regional flights. From Dundo Airport to Dundo/Chitato town centre you can take a metered taxi or arrange a hotel transfer; travel time is roughly 10-20 minutes. Typical taxi fares are about 1,000-3,000 AOA depending on luggage and negotiation.
Quatro de Fevereiro Airport, Luanda (LAD): Luanda’s Quatro de Fevereiro (LAD) is the main international gateway if you must connect internationally. Domestic carriers fly LAD-DUE; from Quatro de Fevereiro into central Luanda expect a 30-60 minute transfer by taxi or private transfer. Airport taxis into Luanda city centre are commonly 2,500-6,000 AOA (prices vary with traffic and time of day).
Train: There is no regular passenger rail service serving Chitato/Dundo. Angola’s main passenger railways (e.g., Benguela Railway) do not provide direct connections to Lunda Norte; some rail infrastructure in the region is used for mining freight rather than public passenger travel.
Bus: Interprovincial coach services link Luanda and other provincial capitals to Dundo; these depart from the main coach terminals and arrive at the local rodoviária (Estação Rodoviária de Dundo). Overland bus journeys are long - typically 24-36 hours from Luanda depending on route and stops. Long-distance coach fares commonly range from about 8,000-20,000 AOA; locally, chapa/minibus fares within the Dundo/Chitato area are much lower (roughly 100-500 AOA).
How to Get Around Chitato
Chitato is easiest reached by flying into nearby Dundo Airport and taking a short taxi or hotel transfer into town; this saves many hours compared with overland buses. Within town, taxis and shared minibuses cover most needs - use walking for short distances and motorbike taxis when streets are narrow or traffic is heavy.
- Domestic flights (Varies (flight fares not listed)) - Regular domestic flights connect Luanda (LAD) with Dundo (DUE); flights are the fastest way to reach Chitato and are recommended if schedules and budget allow. Book in advance during peak travel periods and confirm arrival handling - some flights are subject to change. Expect quick transfers at Dundo airport to town by taxi or hotel pickup.
- Taxis (1,000-3,000 AOA) - Taxis are the most convenient way to get from Dundo Airport into town and to move between neighbourhoods in Dundo/Chitato. Fares are negotiated or metered where meters exist; short airport-centre trips are typically about 1,000-3,000 AOA. Carry cash in local currency and agree the price before starting the trip if no meter is used.
- Interprovincial coach (buses) (8,000-20,000 AOA) - Long-distance coaches run between Luanda and Dundo and are the budget option for overland travel. These trips are long (around 24-36 hours from Luanda) and can be uncomfortable - use them only if you have time and need to avoid flying. Buy tickets at the main terminals and allow extra time for stops and delays.
- Local minibuses / chapas (100-500 AOA) - Within Dundo/Chitato the cheapest way to travel is by chapa or shared minibus; routes are informal and drivers may cram passengers. Fares are low (typically 100-500 AOA) but expect crowded conditions and irregular schedules. Useful for short hops if you're comfortable with local travel styles.
- Motorbike taxis (moto-táxi) (200-800 AOA) - Motorbike taxis are common for short trips and for reaching places off the main roads. They are quicker than walking and cheaper than car taxis for single passengers, but helmets and safety standards vary - carry small change and confirm the fare before departing.
- Walking - Chitato/Dundo town centre is compact enough for walking between markets, shops and many hotels. Pavements and street lighting can be inconsistent; keep to main streets after dark and secure valuables. Walking is the best way to explore neighbourhoods at a relaxed pace.
