Chirk Castle is a medieval fortress near the town of Chirk in north Wales, built to control a strategic crossing on the English-Welsh border. It began as a Welsh Marches stronghold in the late 13th century.
The complex retains a medieval keep and curtain wall alongside later domestic extensions and formal gardens; it is presented as a historic house and estate with visitor access to some interiors and the grounds.
The castle was constructed around 1295 by Roger Mortimer as part of a chain of border fortifications. Over subsequent centuries the site was adapted from a purely military fortress into a country house with landscaped gardens.
The castle sits above the Ceiriog Valley close to the village of Chirk, near the county border with England; it is accessible from the surrounding road network and lies within rural parkland.
