Chirinkotan

Chirinkotan is a small uninhabited volcanic island in the central Kuril Islands belonging to Sakhalin Oblast, Russia. It is an active volcanic cone that rises directly from the North Pacific and is notable for its steep cliffs and conical profile.

The island offers no regular tourist facilities; the main points of interest are the volcano itself and the island’s seabird colonies and coastal cliffs. Approaches are by sea only and landing is often restricted because of rough seas and volcanic hazards.

Chirinkotan formed by successive volcanic eruptions and is classified as an active stratovolcano. Its eruptive history is recorded in scientific and maritime logs rather than in permanent settlement or long-term human occupation.

The island sits in the central Kuril archipelago in the North Pacific, north of the Japanese island chain and east of the Kamchatka Peninsula. It is remote and reached mainly by scientific vessels or occasional expedition boats.
