Chion-in is the head temple of the J4Ddo (Pure Land) Buddhist sect located in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district, near Maruyama Park and Yasaka Shrine. The temple complex is large by Kyoto standards and is an important religious centre for the sect.
The complex includes a very large wooden gate, extensive worship halls, and subsidiary buildings and gardens arranged on a broad precinct. The Sanmon gate is notable for its scale and for being a prominent timber gateway reconstructed in the early 17th century.
Chion-in was founded as the institutional headquarters for the J4Ddo tradition in the medieval period; the site saw major reconstruction and enlargement during the early Edo period with donations from high-ranking patrons. The temple has served as a training and worship centre for the sect across centuries.
The temple sits in eastern Kyoto’s Higashiyama neighbourhood, a short walk from Maruyama Park and the historic streets of the Gion area, making it accessible from central Kyoto by public transport and on foot.
