Chingaza National Natural Park is a protected area in the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia that conserves high Andean páramo, cloud forest and headwaters east of Bogotá.

The park contains moorland, peat bogs and a network of glacial and tectonic lakes used for hiking and wildlife viewing; it is also a core water-supply area for Bogotá’s municipal reservoirs.

Chingaza was designated to protect the páramo ecosystems and the headwaters that feed the capital’s water system, and it supports a range of Andean flora and fauna including high-elevation mammals and birds.

The park lies east of Bogotá in the Eastern Andes, bridging high-altitude landscapes that form part of the watershed feeding the capital city.

  • Water source: The park protects high Andean páramo and supplies important headwaters for Bogotá's reservoirs, making it crucial for regional water security.
  • Weather & gear: High-elevation terrain and frequent fog mean that weather can change rapidly; dress for cold and wet conditions above the tree line.

What to See #

  • Siecha Lakes: A group of high-elevation lakes in the park that are culturally important and commonly visited on day hikes; they sit among páramo moorland and rocky slopes.
