Chinese Pavilion at Drottningholm
Religious Site 18th-century Chinese-style pavilion in Drottningholm Palace gardens
At Drottningholm Palace Park the Chinese Pavilion displays 18th‑century chinoiserie interiors and lacquer rooms; visitors pair the pavilion with palace tours and formal gardens on the island of Lovön.
The Chinese Pavilion at Drottningholm is an 18th-century rococo pavilion located on the island of Lovön in the Drottningholm Palace Park, west of Stockholm. It is one of Sweden’s best-known examples of European chinoiserie and is part of the Drottningholm complex.
The pavilion contains Chinese-themed interiors with lacquer work, painted wallpapers and gilded woodwork, and its small scale and decorative rooms are the main draw. The exterior and surrounding landscaped gardens are also frequently visited as part of tours of Drottningholm Palace grounds.
The building was created for the Swedish royal family in the 18th century and was later altered under royal patronage. It was seriously damaged by a fire in 1961 and subsequently reconstructed using surviving material and historical documentation.
The pavilion stands within Drottningholm Palace Park on Lovön island, approximately 10 km west of central Stockholm and is reached on foot from the palace grounds or by short road approaches.
- Visitor access: Interior access is typically by timed guided tour during the main season; the surrounding park is open year-round without a ticket.
- UNESCO site: Part of the Drottningholm Palace complex, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
