How to Get to Chincoteague
Chincoteague is most easily reached by car from nearby airports and regional rail/bus hubs; the island has limited public transport so a car or pre‑booked transfer is the most practical option. Small general aviation and seasonal shuttle services also serve the area.
Salisbury-Ocean City Wicomico Regional Airport (SBY): The nearest commercial airport to Chincoteague (roughly 45-60 minutes by road). From SBY the practical options are rental car or taxi/ride‑hail for the one‑way trip to Chincoteague-drive time is typically about 45-60 minutes.
Norfolk International Airport (ORF): Norfolk is a larger airport with more frequent flights and is about 1.5-2 hours’ drive to Chincoteague. From ORF the common choices are rental car (recommended) or a pre‑booked shuttle/taxi; travel time by road is around 90-120 minutes depending on traffic and ferry/toll conditions.
Train: There is no direct national rail service to Chincoteague Island. The closest Amtrak/major railheads are Salisbury MD and Norfolk VA-use these for rail into the region and then continue by road.
Bus: Regional bus and shuttle providers connect Salisbury, Ocean City and other eastern Shore towns; from those hubs you will typically need a local taxi or shuttle for the final mile into Chincoteague.
