Chimney Rock National Historic Site is a prominent geological spire and historic wayfinding landmark on the Great Plains of western Nebraska, famous for its role on 19th-century emigrant trails.

The landmark is a tall, narrow rock formation of layered sedimentary origin that stands prominently above the surrounding plains and is accompanied by interpretive trails and a visitor area. It remains an identifiable landmark visible from miles away and is interpreted for its cultural and natural history.

The formation is the product of long-term erosion of softer surrounding sediments, leaving the resistant spire that emigrants used as a guide during westward migrations in the 1800s. The site has since been protected for its historical and geological significance.

Chimney Rock sits in western Nebraska near the North Platte River corridor and the small town of Bayard; it is accessed by paved and gravel roads from regional highways.

  • Prominence: The rock rises roughly 300 feet above the surrounding plains and was used as a navigational landmark by 19th-century emigrants on the Oregon, California and Mormon Trails.
  • When to visit: Best visited in late spring through early autumn when access roads and interpretive trails are open; viewpoints and short trails provide close views of the spire.
