Main image

Chimanimani National Park occupies part of the Chimanimani Mountains along Zimbabwe’s eastern border with Mozambique and protects montane forests, peaks and streams. The area is noted for its botanical diversity and rugged granite scenery.

The park offers a network of mountain trails, waterfalls and viewpoints across steep ridges and valleys, with alpine heath and pockets of mist forest at higher elevations. Hikers use marked routes and campsites to access scenic summits and waterfalls; routes range from day walks to multi-day treks.

The mountain area has long been valued for its distinct flora and as a natural boundary; formal protected-area status was established in the 20th and early 21st century to conserve catchments and endemic species. Conservation work has focused on controlling invasive species and maintaining trail access.

Situated on Zimbabwe’s eastern border in Manicaland Province, the park runs along the frontier with Mozambique within the Chimanimani mountain chain and is reached from towns in eastern Zimbabwe and nearby Mozambique.

  • Hiking conditions: Mountain trails include multi-day routes with rocky terrain and steep ascents; trail conditions can be rough and weather changeable at short notice.
