Chilika Lake

Chilika Lake is a large brackish water lagoon on the Odisha coast of eastern India and is one of the subcontinent’s most important wetland ecosystems. The lake supports diverse birdlife, fishery resources and a resident population of Irrawaddy dolphins.

Visitors come for boat-based wildlife viewing, island sanctuaries and to see migratory waterbirds and dolphins; the lake’s surface area varies seasonally and is often quoted as roughly 1,100 square kilometres at its largest extents. Important features include the Nalabana bird sanctuary and several culturally significant islands with small shrines.

The lake has a long history as a fishing and coastal settlement area and has been subject to conservation and management efforts to balance fisheries, tourism and habitat protection. It is recognised nationally and internationally for its ecological value.

Chilika lies on the central Odisha coast opening to the Bay of Bengal, with principal access points at towns such as Satapada and Rambha that provide boat services onto the lagoon.
