Chikubu Island

Chikubu Island (Chikubushima) is a small, sacred island in Lake Biwa, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, known for its shrine and temple complex and spiritual significance. It has been a pilgrimage site combining Shinto and Buddhist worship for many centuries.

The island’s main features are the Shinto Tsukubusuma Shrine and the Buddhist Hōgon-ji Temple; narrow paths link the religious buildings, small gardens and viewpoints. The compact nature of the island makes it suitable for short walks to view the shrines, stone steps and lakeside panoramas.
