Chichijima
Island Largest Ogasawara island with subtropical beaches and history
Chichijima, the main island of the Ogasawara (Bonin) archipelago, offers subtropical forests, WWII sites, whale and dolphin watching, and clear seas for diving; travelers come for biodiversity, snorkeling and isolated island culture.
Chichijima is the largest inhabited island in the Ogasawara (Bonin) Islands of Japan and serves as the administrative centre for the Ogasawara Village municipality. The island is notable for its subtropical environment, endemic species and role as the main gateway for visitors to the island group.
The island’s harbour and small town are the primary arrival points; passenger ferries from Tokyo take roughly a full day in normal weather. The surrounding waters and coastal reefs are part of Ogasawara National Park and are valued for diving, whale and dolphin watching and rich marine biodiversity.
Chichijima played roles in modern history as a strategically located island in the Pacific and retains wartime remnants and memorials, alongside facilities for fisheries and local services. Contemporary life combines small-scale commerce, tourism services and conservation management.
Geographically the island sits in the North Pacific roughly 1,000 km south of Tokyo, forming the main inhabited node of a remote archipelago of smaller islands and islets spread across several hundred kilometres of ocean.
- Distance and access: Situated about 1,000 kilometres south of Tokyo and served by an overnight ferry connection to Tokyo rather than by a commercial airport on the island.
What to See #
- Chichijima town (ferry harbour): The principal settlement and harbour on the island that functions as the administrative centre for Ogasawara Village and the main point of arrival by ferry.
- Coastal reefs and dive sites: Coastal reefs, submarine cliffs and nearshore dive sites protected within Ogasawara National Park, offering coral communities and frequent sightings of marine megafauna.
How to Get to Chichijima #
Chichijima (the main island of the Ogasawara Islands) is served from Tokyo by the Ogasawara ferry (departing from Takeshiba/Tokyo port) - an overnight voyage of roughly a day. There are no scheduled commercial flights; once docked at Chichijima you can reach Motomachi and other settlements on foot, by local taxi or small local buses from the ferry port.
Tips for Visiting Chichijima #
- Book the Ogasawara (Bonin) ferry from Tokyo well in advance and plan to stay several days-the ferry schedule is infrequent and crossings are long, so itineraries tied to a single day are risky.
- Plan activities around the ferry timetable (arrival and departure days tend to be busiest) and consider booking tours (whale/dolphin watching, snorkeling) through licensed local operators who know protected areas and seasonal wildlife patterns.
- Carry enough cash and essentials: services and ATMs on Chichijima are limited compared with mainland Japan, so top up supplies on arrival or bring what you'll need for multi‑day stays.
Best Time to Visit Chichijima #
Best visited in spring or autumn for mild weather and lower risk of storm-related disruptions while still enjoying marine activities.
