Chester Cathedral

Chester Cathedral is a medieval church in the centre of Chester that began life as a Benedictine abbey and now serves as the Anglican cathedral for the Diocese of Chester. The site has continuous ecclesiastical use from the Norman period and contains notable Gothic and later historic fabric.

Founded as a Benedictine monastery in 1092, the church became a cathedral in the 16th century during the reorganisation of the Church of England. Over subsequent centuries it was altered and restored, producing the mix of Norman, Gothic and later details visible today.

The building occupies a central position within the walled city of Chester, immediately beside the Roman walls and not far from the city’s historic centre and shopping rows.
