Archaeological Site Ancient Greek-Roman ruins near Sevastopol
An archaeological site of an ancient Greek colony near Sevastopol on the Crimean coast, with excavated ruins, mosaics and museum displays. Visitors combine the site with regional coastal scenery.
Chersonesus is an ancient Greek colonial city on the Black Sea coast near modern Sevastopol in Crimea, founded by Greek settlers in the 5th century BCE. It is an extensive archaeological preserve notable for its long sequence of occupation from the classical Greek period through the Byzantine era.
The site contains visible elements of an urban grid, public buildings, domestic quarters and a harbour area. Visitors can see multiple basilicas with mosaic floors, extensive defensive walls, and well-preserved necropoleis; many features are exposed across an area of ruins rather than a single building complex. The on-site museum groups finds from excavations and provides context for the visible remains.
Chersonesus was established by Greek colonists and developed through Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine phases; it later became an important episcopal and administrative centre in the medieval period. Archaeological work has been ongoing since the 19th century, and conservation efforts have continued into the present day.
The archaeological reserve sits on the southwestern coast of the Crimean peninsula, immediately adjacent to the bay of Sevastopol. The modern city of Sevastopol is the nearest urban centre and provides the usual visitor services and access to the site.
- Access and terrain: Accessible from Sevastopol; the site combines exposed ruins and conserved structures so expect uneven walking surfaces and steps.

Tips for Visiting Chersonesus #
- Go early in the day to beat cruise‑ship and afternoon tour crowds from Sevastopol; mornings often give you quieter access to the ruins and better light for photos.
- Enter via the archaeological reserve's main gate and allow time to visit the on‑site museum - the small indoor exhibits provide context and artifacts that many day‑visitors miss.
- Take the uphill path toward the amphitheatre and shoreline for panoramic views of the site and Black Sea; those vantage points reveal the scale of the ruins more clearly than the central ruins alone.
