Chersky Range
Mountains Remote Siberian mountain range with Arctic tundra
In northeastern Siberia, the Chersky Range offers remote, rugged mountains and permafrost landscapes; mountaineers, geologists and adventurous trekkers visit for glaciated ridges and Arctic-scale isolation.
The Chersky Range is a mountain system in northeastern Siberia within the Russian Federation, located north of the Arctic Circle in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia). The range forms part of the complex East Siberian highlands and consists of rugged, often remote terrain.
Alpine and subarctic landscapes dominate much of the range, with glaciers and steep valleys in higher sections and tundra or taiga at lower elevations. The area is sparsely populated and is accessed primarily for scientific work, exploration and limited local use.
The mountains are the result of geological uplift and faulting associated with long-term tectonic processes in northeastern Siberia. Human activity has been limited historically by the region’s remoteness, extreme climate and limited infrastructure.
Geographically the range lies in the far northeast of Russia within the Sakha Republic, north of the Arctic Circle and distant from major urban centres; the nearest small settlements and outposts serve as occasional logistical bases.
Tips for Visiting Chersky Range #
- Treat the Chersky Range as a specialist expedition: the practical visiting window is the short Arctic summer (roughly July-August) when river and overland access is safest, and travel arrangements normally require local guides and charter flights from Yakutsk.
- Don't attempt independent travel into the range-logistics, limited infrastructure, and rapidly changing weather mean guided trips are the realistic way in, and they also point out geological/permafrost features that casual visitors tend to miss.
Best Time to Visit Chersky Range #
The best practical window to visit the Chersky Range is the short summer season (June-August) when access and conditions are least severe.
