Chepstow Castle
Castle Norman castle overlooking River Wye with medieval keep
Perched above the River Wye, this medieval fortress draws visitors for Norman keep architecture, curtain walls and riverside views, plus walks along the nearby Wye Valley.
Chepstow Castle is a Norman-era stone castle on the River Wye in Monmouthshire, Wales, notable for a long history of continuous occupation and layered medieval masonry. Its origins date to the years after the Norman Conquest and it sits on a prominent sandstone cliff overlooking the river.
The castle complex extends along a steep cliff and contains multiple wards and towers linked by curtain walls, producing a linear sequence of defensive structures over a length of several hundred metres. The Great Tower and various gatehouses provide elevated viewpoints over the River Wye and the town of Chepstow; visitors typically walk the ramparts and interior enclosures.
Founded soon after the Norman Conquest, the castle was established by the early Norman magnates to control the River Wye crossing and the surrounding territory. It was expanded and modified through the medieval period, reflecting changes in ownership and defensive needs, and today survives as a ruin managed for public access.
The castle occupies a cliff-top position beside the River Wye at Chepstow, on the Wales-England border; it sits immediately above the town centre and is about 30 km (by road) east of Newport and roughly 40 km from Bristol across the Severn estuary.
- Best viewpoints: Best views of the castle are from the riverbank and from the town side at St Mary's Tower or the road along the cliff; late afternoon light highlights the sandstone walls.
- Visitor note: The site is largely an open ruin with no large modern roofed interiors; wear good footwear for uneven stone and ramparts.
What to See #
- Wards and curtain walls: A sequence of defensive enclosures arranged along a sandstone cliff, including an inner ward, middle ward and outer ward with surviving curtain walls and gate structures.
- Great Tower and keep: The Great Tower and adjoining keep form the highest point of the castle and offer views along the River Wye and across the town.
- Towers and gatehouse: Several medieval towers and the gatehouse remain; changes and repairs span Norman to later medieval periods so masonry shows multiple phases.
