Main image

Chennakeshava Temple at Somanathapura is a 13th-century Hoysala-style Hindu temple in Karnataka, India, renowned for its ornate soapstone sculpture and carved architecture. It was completed in 1268 CE and is dedicated to an aspect of Vishnu.

A compact, highly detailed monument, the complex is notable for its profusion of carved reliefs, decorative pillars and a star-shaped plan typical of Hoysala work. Visitors often focus on the carved outer friezes, the pillared mantapa and the finely turned pillars and ceilings. Much of the ornamentation is at eye level, so the site is well suited to short, close-up study of iconography and craftsmanship.

The temple was commissioned by the commander Somanatha under the Hoysala king Narasimha III and was completed in 1268 CE. It has remained a notable example of Hoysala temple design and continues to be studied and conserved for its sculptural program.

The temple stands in the village of Somanathapura, in Mandya district of Karnataka, about 38 km east of Mysuru. The site is accessible by road from Mysuru and nearby towns.

  • Best time to view: Built of soapstone, the fine detail is easiest to see in early morning light when shadows define the carvings; allow 30-60 minutes to inspect the sculptures.
  • Visit length: The site is relatively compact compared with major temple complexes, so much of the decoration can be seen from short, close-range walks around the shrine.

What to See #

  • Sanctum and mantapa: The temple's inner sanctum contains the main image of Vishnu and a pillared mantapa with lathe-turned pillars and carved ceilings; the mantapa is the primary covered space for ritual and viewing.
  • Outer sculptured walls: The outer walls display continuous carved friezes and narrative panels in soapstone, with multiple registers of mythological and daily-life scenes.
  • Forecourt and platform: A small forecourt and stepped platform surround the temple, providing close-range views of the star-shaped plan and detailed carvings.
