Chennakeshava Temple at Somanathapura is a 13th-century Hoysala-style Hindu temple in Karnataka, India, renowned for its ornate soapstone sculpture and carved architecture. It was completed in 1268 CE and is dedicated to an aspect of Vishnu.
A compact, highly detailed monument, the complex is notable for its profusion of carved reliefs, decorative pillars and a star-shaped plan typical of Hoysala work. Visitors often focus on the carved outer friezes, the pillared mantapa and the finely turned pillars and ceilings. Much of the ornamentation is at eye level, so the site is well suited to short, close-up study of iconography and craftsmanship.
The temple was commissioned by the commander Somanatha under the Hoysala king Narasimha III and was completed in 1268 CE. It has remained a notable example of Hoysala temple design and continues to be studied and conserved for its sculptural program.
The temple stands in the village of Somanathapura, in Mandya district of Karnataka, about 38 km east of Mysuru. The site is accessible by road from Mysuru and nearby towns.
