Chennakesava Temple
Religious Site Hoysala-era temple in Belur noted for intricate carvings
At Belur in Karnataka, the Chennakesava Temple is a 12th‑century Hoysala monument famed for intricate stone carvings and friezes; visitors study the sculpture and architectural detail.
The Chennakesava Temple at Belur, Karnataka, is a major Hoysala-period temple complex dedicated to Vishnu, begun in the early 12th century and widely cited as a prime example of Hoysala architecture.
The complex is centred on a star-shaped platform with a richly carved exterior, a mandapa (hall) supported by lathe-turned pillars, and a sanctum that originally housed the principal icon of Chennakesava. Sculptural programs on the outer walls depict scenes from Hindu epics and finely rendered figures of gods, animals and dancers.
The temple was commissioned by Hoysala rulers in connection with their political and religious patronage in the 12th century and underwent subsequent repairs and additions in later periods. It has long been both a functioning temple and a monument studied for its distinctive Hoysala stonework.
The temple is in the town of Belur in Hassan district, southern Karnataka, and lies near other Hoysala sites such as Halebidu.
- Date and style: Construction began in the early 12th century under Hoysala patronage and the temple is a principal example of Hoysala architecture.
- Material and workmanship: Built mainly from soapstone and noted for lathe-turned pillars and highly detailed relief carving on its outer walls.
What to See #
- Garbhagriha (sanctum): The inner sanctum that houses the temple's main Vishnu image and sits on the star-shaped plan intrinsic to Hoysala design.
- Mantapa and halls: A large open mantapa or central hall with lathe-turned pillars and carved ceilings used for ritual congregation and ceremonies.
- Exterior friezes and sculptures: The temple's sculpted outer walls with panels depicting episodes from Hindu epics, musicians, dancers and deities carved in soapstone.
