How to Get to Chéngguān Qū
Chéngguān Qū refers to the central district of Lhasa and is reached primarily via Lhasa Gonggar Airport (LXA) or the Lhasa Railway Station (拉萨站) on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. Both the airport and the rail station connect the city to the rest of China, but allow extra time for transfers and altitude acclimatisation.
Lhasa Gonggar Airport (LXA): Lhasa Gonggar Airport is the main airport serving Chengguan District (central Lhasa). The airport is outside Gonggar County - plan on about 1-1.5 hours to reach central Chengguan by road. Airport shuttle buses run between the terminal and central Lhasa for roughly CNY 30-50 and take about 60-90 minutes depending on traffic; a taxi to Chengguan typically costs in the region of CNY 300-450 and takes about 45-80 minutes. Be prepared for altitude checks and occasional weather-related disruptions in winter and spring.
Train: Lhasa Railway Station (拉萨站) on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is in the city and is the main rail gateway to Chengguan. Trains from Xining take roughly 21-24 hours; hard-sleeper tickets from Xining to Lhasa typically run about CNY 200-350 while soft-sleeper tickets are typically CNY 400-700 (prices vary by season and route). Long-distance trains from Beijing, Chengdu and other Chinese cities are available but are significantly longer and more expensive; book tickets in advance and bring your passport for collection.
Bus: Long-distance coaches depart from Lhasa’s passenger/coach stations (拉萨客运站) to destinations across Tibet - common routes include Lhasa-Shigatse (around 3-4 hours, roughly CNY 40-80) and Lhasa-Nyingchi (around 6-7 hours, roughly CNY 100-180). City public buses connect Chengguan’s main streets and attractions for very low fares (see Getting Around). Expect checkpoints on intercity routes and carry identification (passport) when travelling.
How to Get Around Chéngguān Qū
Getting around Chengguan is easiest by short taxi rides or a mix of city buses and walking for nearby sights. For comfort and time savings at altitude, taxis or app-hails work best; use buses for tight budgets and short hops once acclimatised.
- City buses (1-2 CNY) - Lhasa's city buses are the cheapest way to get around Chengguan - most short urban rides cost about CNY 1-2. Routes serve main corridors (Barkhor, Potala, Norbulingka, railway station) but services can be slow and crowded; bring small change and a printed Chinese name of your stop if you need to ask the driver. Buses are a good option once you've acclimatised and for short hops between sights.
- Taxis (10-450 CNY) - Metered taxis are the most practical door-to-door option in Chengguan; short inner-city trips are usually modest (roughly CNY 10-40), while airport transfers are commonly CNY 300-450. Drivers may not speak English - carry your destination written in Chinese. Taxis are quick and convenient for adjusting to altitude without long walks, but confirm the fare or insist on the meter.
- Ride-hailing (DiDi / Apps) (10-200 CNY) - DiDi and similar Chinese ride-hailing apps operate in Lhasa but availability can be more limited than in larger Chinese cities; you will need a working Chinese mobile payment method or a local number to use some features. App rides can be comparable to taxis in price and sometimes offer English interfaces for booking; always check that drivers will accept the route and confirm any higher "airport" or surge charges.
- Intercity coaches (40-180 CNY) - Coaches from the Lhasa passenger stations connect Chengguan to other Tibetan towns (Shigatse, Nyingchi, etc.). Buses are cheaper than trains for some routes and often depart multiple times daily; journeys can be long and road conditions variable. Expect CNY 40-180 depending on distance and standard of coach - bring layers, water and your passport for on-route checks.
- Bicycle / e-bike rental (20-80 CNY/day) - Short-term bike and e-bike rentals are available around Chengguan for sightseeing and short trips. Due to altitude and thinner air, cycling can be more strenuous than at lower elevations - take it easy, keep rides short, and hydrate. Rentals typically cost about CNY 20-80 per day; check battery range for e-bikes before setting off.
- Walking - Walking is the best way to explore the old town, Barkhor Circuit and the area around the Potala Palace, but do so slowly because of the high altitude (Chengguan sits above 3,600 m). Short walks are easy and rewarding; if you feel dizzy or breathless, stop and rest. Carry water, sunscreen and your passport when walking between major sights.
