The Château des Baux is the ruined medieval fortress above the village of Les Baux-de-Provence in the Alpilles, Provence. It is one of the region’s most prominent historic ruins and occupies a dominant rocky outcrop.
Extensive ruined curtain walls, towers and defensive structures set on a rocky ridge, with pathways that allow visitors to walk the ramparts and access multiple viewpoints. Interpretive panels and displays on site explain the fortress’ military architecture and the site’s medieval role.
Originating in the medieval period, the fortress was developed and refortified over several centuries before falling into ruin. The site has long been a landmark in Provence and is preserved today as an archaeological and tourist site.
Perched above the village of Les Baux-de-Provence in the Alpilles massif, the castle overlooks limestone plains of central Provence and is accessible from nearby towns such as Arles and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

How to Get to Château des Baux #
Les Baux-de-Provence is about 20 km north of Arles and 30 km southwest of Avignon. By car, follow the D17 and local roads; there is public parking around the village with pedestrian access to the château. Regional buses run from Arles in high season; driving offers the most flexibility.
