Château de la Brède is a medieval moated castle near the village of La Brède in Gironde, southwestern France, with origins in the 14th century. It is best known as the family seat and birthplace of the philosopher Montesquieu (born 1689).
Constructed in the 14th century as a fortified manor, the château remained in the same family line for centuries and became notable as Montesquieu’s ancestral home. Alterations and conservation work over later centuries preserved both the military and residential elements.
The château is located in the Gironde department of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, south of Bordeaux near the village of La Brède, and is accessed from the Bordeaux area by regional roads.
