Château de Gaillon, in the town of Gaillon in Normandy, is an early 16th-century château known for its Renaissance architectural features introduced during a major rebuilding under Cardinal Georges d’Amboise.
The site presents a combination of Renaissance decorative elements and older medieval structures, including an ornate courtyard and façades that reflect Italianate influence in French architecture of the period. Surviving fragments of the château illustrate the transition from fortified medieval residence to Renaissance palace.
Cardinal Georges d’Amboise undertook large-scale reconstruction at Gaillon in the early 1500s to create an archbishop’s residence with contemporary Renaissance motifs; earlier medieval components were incorporated or rebuilt during this program. The château’s history includes later modifications and partial destruction, leaving the present ensemble of Renaissance and medieval elements.
Located in Gaillon in Normandy, the château stands in the Eure department and occupies a riverside position within the town’s historic core.
