Château de Chenonceau

Château de Chenonceau is a 16th-century French château in the Loire Valley that spans the River Cher with an arched gallery. It is renowned for its architecture, riverside setting and historic ownership by several notable Renaissance figures.

Visitors explore the long gallery over the river, state rooms, period furnishings and formal gardens that extend to the riverbanks. The château’s layout and decorative interiors reflect Renaissance tastes and subsequent 17th- and 18th-century changes.

The site originated on medieval foundations and was rebuilt and extended in the early 1500s; it became associated with families and figures such as Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de’ Medici who influenced its gardens and interiors. The château has been preserved as a major historic house museum since the 19th century.

Chenonceau stands in the commune of Chenonceaux in the Indre-et-Loire department, roughly 25 kilometres southeast of Tours and within the Loire Valley region, surrounded by parkland and formal gardens.
