Château de Chambord is a French Renaissance château in Chambord, Centre-Val de Loire. Construction began in 1519 for King Francis I and it is one of the most recognizable châteaux in the Loire Valley.

The château is notable for its monumental skyline of towers, chimneys and gables and for the double-helix staircase often attributed to Leonardo da Vinci. Visitors explore furnished reception rooms, roof terraces with extensive chimneys and the surrounding parkland that offers long walks and wildlife viewing.

Built as a hunting lodge and a showpiece of royal power, the château was begun under Francis I and completed in stages during the 16th century; its exact design authorship is uncertain and reflects Italianate and French traditions. It later passed through royal and state ownership and has undergone restoration campaigns to preserve its fabric and interiors.

The château sits in the Loire Valley amid large wooded grounds and agricultural land, near the town of Chambord and the river Loir.

• Climb the central double-helix staircase up to the rooftop terrace-this gives one of the best panoramic views of the château's chimneys and the surrounding forested park.
• If you have time, explore the estate by bike or on the marked trails rather than only touring the interior; the grounds and hunting reserve reveal the full scale of the domain.
