Château de Caen

Château de Caen is a medieval fortress in the city of Caen, Normandy, originally constructed by William the Conqueror in the 11th century. It is one of the larger surviving medieval castles in northern France, with extensive fortifications.

On site visitors can walk sections of the curtain walls and ramparts, visit the central keep and enter the museums housed in the castle precincts, which present regional history and fine art. The defensive enclosure covers an area of about 5 hectares.

The castle was begun in the 1060s under William the Conqueror and was altered and reinforced in later medieval periods; it has served military and administrative roles through the centuries and sustained damage during modern conflicts before being conserved as a historic monument.

The fortress stands in central Caen in Normandy, on a raised position overlooking the city, within walking distance of Caen’s historic center and transport hubs.
