Main image

Château de Biron is a historic fortified château in the commune of Biron, in the Dordogne department of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its fabric dates from the medieval period through the Renaissance, reflecting continuous occupation and modification over several centuries.

The site combines medieval defensive elements and later residential buildings so visitors can see a stone keep, curtain walls and a Renaissance logis within a single compound. The château stands on a prominent hilltop and offers long views across the Dordogne countryside, making the approach and the panorama part of the visit.

Construction began in the medieval period and the complex was altered and extended in the 15th to 17th centuries as defensive needs changed and residential comfort was added. It was associated with local noble families across the medieval and early modern periods and preserved as a historic monument in the modern era.

The château sits above the village of Biron in Dordogne, in rural southwest France; the nearest larger towns are Bergerac and Sarlat-la-Canéda, both within roughly an hour’s drive depending on route.

  • Hilltop position: Perched on a prominent limestone outcrop, the château occupies a defensive position visible from several kilometres away.
  • Access and visiting: Open to the public seasonally with interior rooms and circulating exhibitions in some years; check current opening dates before visiting.
