Château de Beynac
Castle Medieval cliff-top castle overlooking Dordogne valley
A medieval fortress overlooking the Dordogne River at Beynac-et-Cazenac; visitors climb battlements, explore period rooms and take river cruises to view the steep valley and village beneath.
Château de Beynac is a well-preserved 12th-century fortress overlooking the Dordogne River in the village of Beynac-et-Cazenac. It ranks among the most recognizable medieval castles in the Dordogne region.
The estate offers a substantial keep, intact curtain walls and battlements that visitors can climb for wide views across the Dordogne valley. The interior includes restored rooms and small displays that illustrate the castle’s defensive and domestic arrangements across the medieval and early modern periods.
Constructed in the 12th century by the barons of Beynac, the château played an active role in regional conflicts including episodes of the Hundred Years’ War and later territorial disputes; it underwent restorations in the 19th century and has been conserved for public visitation.
Sited on the right bank of the Dordogne River in Beynac-et-Cazenac, the château faces the river and the village below and stands opposite Château de Castelnaud in the Vézère/Dordogne valley.
- Clifftop position: Perched on a limestone cliff approximately 150 metres above the Dordogne River, the site provides commanding views of the valley and opposing castles.
- Paired sites: Located directly across the river from Château de Castelnaud, forming a classic Dordogne rive-droite / rive-gauche medieval pairing that is often visited together.

- Keep (12th century): The main medieval keep dating to the 12th century with curtain walls and towers that remain largely intact and accessible to visitors.
- Ramparts and views: Ramparts and battlements that provide panoramic views over the Dordogne River valley and the village below, with the château standing prominently on a limestone cliff.
- Castle interior: Interior rooms and small exhibition areas showing period furniture, masonry and the castle's defensive layout from medieval to early modern alterations.
