Château d'Ancy-le-Franc

Château d’Ancy-le-Franc is a 16th-century Renaissance château in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of eastern France, built for a prominent noble family and showing Italianate architectural influence. The château is noted for its regular façades, inner courtyard and richly decorated interior spaces.

Interior features include painted decoration and period rooms that reflect Renaissance aesthetic programmes; exterior elements show symmetry and classical motifs introduced during the Italian-influenced phase of French chateau-building. The site is visited for its architecture, state rooms and surrounding parkland.

The château was commissioned and built in the mid-1500s by the Clermont-Tonnerre family, with construction and decoration reflecting Italian Renaissance models that were being adapted in France at the time. Over subsequent centuries it underwent restorations and changes in ownership but retains its core Renaissance plan and decoration.

It stands in the village of Ancy-le-Franc in Yonne, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, north of the city of Auxerre and is accessible by regional roads from surrounding towns.
