The Cistercian Abbey of Fontenay is an early 12th-century monastic complex near Montbard in Burgundy. It was founded in 1118 and is celebrated for its preservation of Cistercian architectural principles.

The site presents a compact ensemble of stone buildings laid out around a cloister, including a basilica-style abbey church, chapter house and the former dormitory and refectory. Interiors emphasize plain masonry, simple vaulting and functional spaces rather than decorative sculpture or polychrome finishes.

Established by monks from Clairvaux under Saint Bernard’s Cistercian reform, the abbey was built in the first half of the 12th century and remained active until the French Revolution, when monastic life ceased and property changed hands. 19th- and 20th-century conservation work restored many structural elements and returned the site to public use.

Situated near the village of Montbard in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, the abbey lies in a rural valley roughly 30-40 kilometres northwest of Dijon and is accessed via local roads from the A6 corridor.

The Abbey of Fontenay is served via Montbard on the Paris-Dijon rail line (SNCF): take a train to Montbard and then a short taxi ride or local bus to the abbey (the final leg is a short drive). By car the abbey is reached from the Dijon area in roughly an hour depending on route; local rural roads connect the site to nearby towns and Montbard.

• Arrive at opening to explore the cloister and church before coach visits arrive; the site is compact so early visits feel peaceful and uncrowded.
• Use the main visitor entrance and parking area at the site-the abbey is best experienced on foot, following the marked paths to the forge and mill where many visitors don't linger.
• Allow time to walk the riverside paths and the grounds outside the monastic buildings: these simple engineered waterworks and the surrounding landscape are part of what makes Fontenay special but are easily missed in a rushed visit.
