Charyn National Park in Almaty Region protects the Charyn River canyon system, a landscape of eroded sandstone formations and narrow gorges in southeastern Kazakhstan. The canyon is noted for distinctive hoodoo-like pillars and steep-walled valleys.

The park’s best-known section, often called the Valley of Castles, features tall, sculpted sandstone towers and ridges formed by erosion. Trails run along the canyon rim and into the gorge, offering viewpoints, short hikes and opportunities to study the geology and local flora. Other parts of the park include broader canyon sections and sheltered riparian areas.

The Charyn canyon system formed over long geological time by river incision and weathering of sedimentary rock layers. The area has been recognised for its natural value and is managed as a national park to protect the landforms and associated ecosystems.

The park lies in Almaty Region in southeast Kazakhstan along the Charyn River; it is reached by road from the city of Almaty and sits within a dry, steppe-to-mountain transitional landscape.

  • Photo Tip: Known for dramatic hoodoo-like rock formations and colourful layered sandstone produced by long-term erosion; best light for photography is in the morning or late afternoon.
  • Access and Visit Options: Accessible by road from Almaty; the park is commonly visited on a day trip but also offers hiking routes for overnight stays in the canyon area.
