Charyn National Park in Almaty Region protects the Charyn River canyon system, a landscape of eroded sandstone formations and narrow gorges in southeastern Kazakhstan. The canyon is noted for distinctive hoodoo-like pillars and steep-walled valleys.
The park’s best-known section, often called the Valley of Castles, features tall, sculpted sandstone towers and ridges formed by erosion. Trails run along the canyon rim and into the gorge, offering viewpoints, short hikes and opportunities to study the geology and local flora. Other parts of the park include broader canyon sections and sheltered riparian areas.
The Charyn canyon system formed over long geological time by river incision and weathering of sedimentary rock layers. The area has been recognised for its natural value and is managed as a national park to protect the landforms and associated ecosystems.
The park lies in Almaty Region in southeast Kazakhstan along the Charyn River; it is reached by road from the city of Almaty and sits within a dry, steppe-to-mountain transitional landscape.

How to Get to Charyn National Park #
Charyn National Park is approximately 200 km east of Almaty. The drive takes about 3-4 hours via A3/IA-10; organized day tours from Almaty are common. There is a short walk from parking areas to the main viewpoints and trailheads.

- Bring sturdy hiking shoes and sun protection-trail surfaces vary from packed earth to loose scree.
- Visit the Charyn Canyon Valley of Castles early in the morning or late afternoon for the best shadows and cooler hiking conditions.
- Plan for minimal services-pack food and water; mobile coverage can be intermittent in the canyon.
