Main image

Charleston Farmhouse is an historic farmhouse and artists’ house in East Sussex that became the home and creative hub of members of the Bloomsbury Group in the early 20th century. It is preserved for its interior decoration, artworks and association with modernist British art.

The house contains painted interiors, decorative schemes and furnishings by occupants including Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, and displays work by associated artists. Guided tours and room displays interpret the domestic workshops, studios and the decorative ensemble created by residents.

The farmhouse was occupied from the early 20th century by members of the Bloomsbury Group who used it as a country retreat and creative workshop. Subsequent conservation has focused on preserving original decorative painting and the domestic collection associated with that period.

Charleston stands in the Lewes district of East Sussex near the village of Firle, in a rural setting of fields and lanes typical of the South Downs fringe. It is reached from nearby towns by road and is a short drive from the Sussex coast.
