Charles V Wall
Historical Site Historic defensive wall in Gibraltar from Spanish era
The Charles V Wall is a historic defensive wall on the Rock of Gibraltar constructed during the 16th century under the Spanish Habsburg monarch Charles V. It forms part of Gibraltar’s extensive fortifications and crosses the eastern slope of the Rock.
Walks alongside sections of the wall give close views of masonry, bastions and the steep escarpment; the structure has been modified and repaired over centuries as military technology and occupiers changed. The wall links higher defensive positions on the Rock with lower coastal defenses and has been incorporated into later British-era fortification works.
The wall occupies the eastern and southern slopes of the Rock of Gibraltar overlooking the Bay of Gibraltar and the Strait of Gibraltar. It is within the territory of Gibraltar and is visible from the town and seafront below.

How to Get to Charles V Wall #
The easiest approach is on foot from the city center of Gibraltar. From Casemates Square or Main Street, follow signs toward the Upper Rock Nature Reserve and the Charles V Wall trail. Taxis and local buses serve the lower town; from there the walk up to the wall takes 10-20 minutes depending on route and fitness.
Tips for Visiting Charles V Wall #
- Walk the wall from Trafalgar Cemetery toward the sea for the best sequence of ramparts and embrasures.
- Bring a windproof layer-the exposed Western側 of Gibraltar catches the Atlantic breeze.
