Charax Spasinu
Archaeological Site Ancient Parthian–Hellenistic port near Basra, archaeological ruins
Near modern Basra, Charax Spasinu marks an ancient river port that served Hellenistic and Parthian trade; researchers study its canal layouts and reported urban remains.
Charax Spasinu was an ancient port city at the head of the Persian Gulf, located in the area of present-day Basra Governorate in southern Iraq. It became the capital of the local kingdom of Characene and was an important node for maritime and overland trade in the Hellenistic, Parthian and early Sasanian periods.
The city occupied a strategic position at the mouths of the Tigris-Euphrates river system and functioned as a commercial entrepôt connecting Mesopotamia with the Persian Gulf. Over time changes in river courses and shifting political control altered its fortunes and the site was eventually abandoned.
Ruins and ancient accounts place it in the coastal plain of southern Iraq, in the historical marshy delta region near the modern city of Basra.
- Political and commercial role: Served as the capital of the Characene kingdom and a major trading port on the northern edge of the Persian Gulf during the Hellenistic and Parthian eras.
