Chapultepec Castle

Chapultepec Castle sits on Chapultepec Hill within Chapultepec Park in Mexico City and is the site of the Museo Nacional de Historia. Construction on the present castle complex dates to the late 18th century and it has played multiple political and cultural roles in Mexican history.

The castle contains period interiors, exhibition galleries of Mexican history and military artifacts, and well-maintained formal terraces and gardens. The hilltop terraces give expansive views over Chapultepec Park and toward the central city, making the site both a museum and an outlook point.

Originally constructed in the late 18th century as a viceroyal residence and later adapted for different uses, the castle became the imperial residence of Maximilian I in the 1860s and served as Mexico’s presidential residence until it was turned into a national history museum in the mid-20th century.

Located within Chapultepec Park in the Miguel Hidalgo borough of Mexico City, the castle occupies a prominent hill roughly west of the historic city center and is accessible by park roads and public transport.
