Chapman’s Peak is a steep rocky promontory on the Atlantic coast of the Cape Peninsula in the Western Cape of South Africa, rising to approximately 593 metres above sea level. The headland is most famous for the scenic road that runs along its seaward face.

A carved coastal road of about 9 kilometres runs along the mountain between Hout Bay and Noordhoek and provides numerous viewpoints, parking bays and photo stops. The route is used for scenic drives, cycling and sunset viewing and offers wide views over Hout Bay, the ocean and nearby cliffs.

The road was constructed in the early 20th century, with work carried out between 1915 and 1922 to create the carriageway around the promontory. Since then it has been upgraded and periodically closed for rockfall mitigation and engineering works.

Geographically the peak and its road sit on the western side of the Cape Peninsula, immediately between the communities of Hout Bay and Noordhoek, roughly south of central Cape Town along the Atlantic seaboard.

  • Elevation: The peak rises to about 593 metres above sea level, dominating the coastal strip between Hout Bay and Noordhoek.
  • Access note: The drive along the promontory is subject to seasonal closures for rockfall control and maintenance, so check local conditions before visiting.

What to See #

  • Chapman's Peak Drive: A 9-kilometre coastal road carved into the face of the promontory that links Hout Bay and Noordhoek and provides multiple formal viewpoints and lay-bys for photos and stops.
