Chankillo Archaeoastronomical Complex

Chankillo is an archaeological complex on the north coast of Peru noted for an aligned sequence of thirteen towers that functioned as a solar observatory. It provides one of the earliest known large-scale horizon observatories in the Americas.

The distinctive feature is a near-linear row of 13 towers stretching along a ridge that served as a calibrated horizon marker for the rising and setting sun. Visitors also see nearby ceremonial architecture, residential areas and defensive works that together document a regional ceremonial center.

Archaeological evidence places construction and primary use of the complex in the first millennium BCE, when local societies built monumental architecture for calendrical, ceremonial and political purposes. The towers and associated structures show organized community effort and astronomical knowledge.

The site lies in the Casma Valley on Peru’s north-central coast within the Ancash region, set in an arid coastal landscape of river valleys and low hills.
