Chankillo Archaeoastronomical Complex

Historical Site Pre-Columbian solar observatory with aligned towers

Chankillo in Ancash features thirteen aligned towers forming a solar observatory and associated fortifications; visitors study prehispanic astronomy, walk the coastal desert ruins and visit the small onsite museum.

Main image

Chankillo is an archaeological complex on the north coast of Peru noted for an aligned sequence of thirteen towers that functioned as a solar observatory. It provides one of the earliest known large-scale horizon observatories in the Americas.

The distinctive feature is a near-linear row of 13 towers stretching along a ridge that served as a calibrated horizon marker for the rising and setting sun. Visitors also see nearby ceremonial architecture, residential areas and defensive works that together document a regional ceremonial center.

Archaeological evidence places construction and primary use of the complex in the first millennium BCE, when local societies built monumental architecture for calendrical, ceremonial and political purposes. The towers and associated structures show organized community effort and astronomical knowledge.

The site lies in the Casma Valley on Peru’s north-central coast within the Ancash region, set in an arid coastal landscape of river valleys and low hills.

  • Tower alignment and span: The thirteen towers span roughly 300 meters along the ridge and mark incremental sunrise and sunset positions across the year.
  • Age and cultural period: The complex dates to the preclassic horizon of Andean archaeology, with construction and use centered in the first millennium BCE.

What to See #

  • Thirteen Towers (solar observation line): A line of thirteen stone towers aligned along a ridge that served as a solar horizon observatory, used to track the sun's rising and setting positions throughout the year.
  • Fortress and temple precincts: Associated ceremonial and residential structures including a fortified hilltop complex and temple areas that form part of the same archaeological ensemble.

Tips for Visiting Chankillo Archaeoastronomical Complex #

  • Climb the Thirteen Towers early for sunrise or late afternoon - the light emphasizes the alignment and sheds harsh midday glare.
  • Bring sun protection and water; the coast is arid and shade is limited at Chankillo.
  • Pair Chankillo with a stop at the nearby museum at Casma to understand the broader pre-Columbian context.
